Finally after months of waiting, Google updated its PageRank database! Although SEOnoob has only 28 posts (not including this one) and is barely 2 months old, it has already been linked by quite a few posts that were dugg/del.icoi.us-ed and was also listed on some wikis about SEO but the PR5 ranking given was quite a surprise to me =)

As always I’ll try to analyse the latest PR update and see if there were anything weird happening. One of the most critical component of PR used to be the no. of backlinks to the site, but I think in this latest PR update, there could be some major changes. There’s a new site which I track and frequent called techgurls, and although they’ve been dugg twice/thrice already, with almost 600 backlinks, they have only received a PR4, compared to SEOnoob, which only has 131 links.

However, if we take a closer look at the more popular links from techgurls e.g. their most popular dugg post “How to Stop Yourself Slacking at Work“, that page alone has a PR6! SEOnoob’s most popular post also has a PR6.

Therefore, from this analysis and comparing the 2 sites, the most obvious difference among the 2 is cross-linking between posts within the site and on SEOnoob this is done through tags. Posts with similar tags are displayed on another page, like a Wordpress category whereas on techgurls, the tags were external links to Technorati, thus missing out on cross-linking within the site.

Furthermore, since tagging is considered one of the must-have features of web 2.0 applications, this could mean that it is getting more important in Google’s method of allocating PageRank (PR) to websites. Anyway, this is all just my theory but since it worked on this site alone, it might be worth noting the difference tagging makes!
